The Healing Power of Meditation: Beyond Your Imagination. The healing power of meditation defies explanation but I'll give it a try: It will heal your spirit, mind, and body from the inside out, at the perfect rate for you. Imagine someone who is dangerously dehydrated. So much so that they're delirious. You go to offer them water, but they push it away. You try again, and still they refuse. Someone nearby takes a sip of soda, and they grab for that violently. You try to explain that soda will only make their thirst worse, but they're convinced that downing soda is the solution to their problem. This person is most of us these days. Odds are, if you're reading this, you've been running on redline for way too long. Before we even enter school, we're running on deadlines.
My dependence on caffeine was so bad that at one point I had to make
sure I watched my intake so that I could still get some effect from
Mountain Dew plus stay-awake pills at midterms and finals. If you don't
think I've been there and done that, trust me: I have.
By middle school, most of us are sleep deprived to one degree or another. And it only gets worse. Most of us are dependent on caffeine to stay awake and function.
Soda becomes high-caffeine soda. High-caffeine soda becomes energy
drinks. Each level is a natural step, and seems logical, but each one
only helps you stay afloat. You never seem to get ahead that way.
The body is amped up, but the spirit is forgotten. Of course, it's not just our societal addiction to performance enhancing drugs (only athletes seem to have rules against them), but also that we are increasingly pressured to stay "on the grid". Internet technology, wireless devices (hardly phones anymore) and such are making it so we're always wired in. People will have conversations which are nothing but constant ultra-detailed status updates, with no real communication about what their thoughts, feelings, hopes and fears are. With all of this going on, it's getting harder and harder to find physical and mental space to step back and reflect. The healing power of meditation is that it does just this. If you can find the right meditation method, you can use the healing power of meditation to deal with both the need to push the body beyond its capacities, and relieve the pressure of always being wired in to everyone else, with no room for you. As you meditate, you begin by calming the body, and letting it balance itself. Simply showing this basic love for your body will help tremendously. At the same time, you'll find that your mind becomes more fluidic, more agile and resilient. Stress can't build up if there's nothing for it to use as leverage. Doing something good for your mind and for your body at the same time, with one simple action: Meditation. I meditate twice per day, unless the day specifically calls for more or less. This has not only given me the benefits I've described above, but my spiritual path has unfolded much more easily for me. As one of my very favorite teachers says: "Prayer is talking at God; meditation is listening to God." By opening yourself up to connect to the Universe, you are allowing yourself to become closer to the Source. In truth, this is the truest benefit from meditation; not some biological mechanism, but in that it allows you to reconnect to the essence of the Divine that resides within you. That is the true healing power of meditation. For further reading:
