Is Mediocre Meditation Enough? Or Are You Ready for Cosmic Meditation? While meditation for pure relaxation is good, it's not enough. Cosmic meditation is taking that first big step of relaxing the body and calming the mind, and using it as an active tool. Building awareness and doing the spiritual equivalent of lifting iron makes us better healers and brings us closer to enlightenment. Meditation comes in all kinds of different formats. Anything used to relax and quiet the mind is a form of meditation. We have sought this place of stillness all our lives as have every generation before. At the basic level, meditation is often so subtle that it goes unnoticed. Keith Olbermann, long time baseball fan, once explained why he felt the need to go to a baseball game amid personal turmoil. he said "some people meditate, I go watch baseball". The unspoken truth is that watching baseball is his personal form of meditation. Cooking, art, yardwork, going to the theater, shooting practice, sports, video games, driving, or just zoning in front of the tube can all be forms of meditation. But, there's a problem: They're limited. When I say "cosmic meditation", I'm talking about taking what you've learned and gained in your meditative practice (in whatever form) and taking it to the next level. As healers, we acknowledge and accept that we're working with a Higher Power of some sort. The specifics vary depending on who you ask, of course. Yet at the same time, there is this shared knowledge that there is Something or Somebody that ties all of this together. "Prayer is talking at God. Meditation is listening to God" It is possible to use meditation to bring yourself closer to this creative Source. It is possible to use meditation to collect vast amounts of prana (energy). It is possible to use meditation to quiet the mind so much that all the petty noise of the world falls away, leaving only your true self and your connection with all life. It is possible to use meditation to receive guidance. It is possible to use meditation to navigate reality itself. All of these things are possible with practice. But, as with all things, one needs to choose the right tool for the job. As cathartic as sports may be, it's too noisy to go deep. Try letting go of the outside world while driving and you'll be in for a nasty surprise. The usual tools have carried you this far, but to go further, you'll need something with more firepower. More than ordinary meditation. A more...cosmic meditation practice. To reach what you'd call cosmic meditation, I'd suggest trying out the Higher Balance curriculum. A very simple system which is easy to learn, yet adaptable to any purpose. All of the uses for meditation I have outlined above and more I have experienced. If you're happy in the shallow end of meditation, relaxing the body and calming the emotions, that's great! Go with it. But, if you're ready to try the deep end you won't be disappointed.
